Despite the comical proportions of a fat bike, it takes only one ride to understand it’s appeal. The ultra wide tires create huge traction on slick and loose surfaces. Although heavier than most bikes and turn slowly, speed isn’t the point. The massive volume of the tires allows you to run air pressures so low resulting in floatation over sand, mud, kerbs, stairs and other terrain that would otherwise be impassable.
Recent design advances have expanded the bikes’ appeal such as single-ring drivetrains (1×7/8/9/10/11 systems) offer a wide range of gears without requiring a front derailleur and, changes in frame geometry have made the bikes more maneuverable and easier to steer.
Just don’t get too excited about using a fat bike for everyday transportation. Its not meant to be a practical bike.. ITS A FUN BIKE! Riding one makes you feel like you’re eight years old again.
And that might ultimately be the fat bike’s biggest draw!
